   Résumé
   À la suite d'une maladie, Helen Keller est devenue sourde, aveugle et muette. Elle a dix ans lorsque ses parents font appel à une institutrice spécialisée, Annie Sullivan, elle-même à demi-aveugle.
   Commentaire
   Cette lutte pour permettre à un être enfermé dans un corps diminué d'accéder au langage, indispensable à l'éclosion des sentiments, est traitée à travers les rapports les plus physiques qui soient (la violence) et un symbolisme volontairement élémentaire (eau, terre, feu). La tension constante et le paroxysme auquel atteignent des actrices remarquables font déferler l'émotion de ce film d'une générosité exceptionnelle.
